Abstract
BeO ceramic is made by providing a slip which is substantially aqueous in base and contains BeO powder of less than 100 U.S.S. mesh, an organic binding agent capable of forming a gelatinous suspension in water and a blowing agent, with or without a destabilant for the blowing agent, heating the slip to a temperature above room temperature such that the blowing agent decomposes whilst the binding agent retains its effectiveness to provide an expanded and set solidified structure and thereafter sintering the set structure. Specified binding agents are tragacanth gum, carboxy methyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose and glucose. Conventional blowing agents which decompose at 30-120 DEG C. are listed. NH4OH may be used as destabilant for H2O2. The porosity of the ceramic may be 70% by volume. The slip may be cured at 30-120 DEG C. and sintered at 1850 DEG C.
