Abstract

A reinforced product is obtained by curing a composition of (i) a polymer of a 1-alkene, (ii) a compound containing 2 or more non-conjugated ethylenic bonds, (iii) siliceous reinforcing elements whose surfaces have been brushed with a silane or chrome finishing agent and (iv) an organic peroxide. Of the many components specified, those preferred are: (i) polymers and copolymers of ethylene, propylene, butene, pentene and heptene, (ii) divinyl benzene, a liquid polymer of butadiene, ethylene dimethacrylate, triethylene glycol dimethacrylate, butylene dimethacrylate and propane trimethacrylate, (iii) silica, glass fibres, glass flakes, glass plates, particles of ceramics, porcelain or quartz, and glass yarn, roving, strand, mat, staple yarn, woven fabric or roving, cord or chopped roving; preferably brushed with vinyl silane or a Werner-type complex, and (iv) dicumyl peroxide. Optional ingredients are carbon black, magnesium oxide, hydroxide and carbonate, zinc oxide, stearic acid, trimethyl dihydroquinoline, 2,6-di-t.-Bu-p-cresol, petroleum oil, sulphur and conventional accelerators. The products find application as laminates, tyre carcass, hose and belting.
