A method of producing ribs or depressions on a bar for use inprestressing concrete, comprises rolling the bar between a pair of rolls slipping of the bar relative to a contoured roll of the pair being prevented, while slipping relative to the other smooth, roll is produced. Either the smooth roll 5, Fig. 1, is of smaller diameter than the contoured roll 1, the rolls being driven at the same rotational speed, or the rolls are of the same diameter with the contoured roll driven faster. The bar 4 is formed with helical ribs 3 around less than half its circumference. The difference in peripheral velocity between the rolls is made at least five times the ratio of the height h of the thread to the smooth roll diameter.
