993,155. Thermo-electric materials. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 21, 1963 [March 9, 1962], No. 9211/62. Heading H1K. In preparing a thermo-electric element the basic material (e.g. lead telluride or germanium telluride) is pre-cast and then crushed and ground into a fine powder to which is added a small quantity of iron powder or other suitable material, the whole being thoroughly mixed to form a homogeneous mass by pressing. The latter may be a hot pressing process, but hydrostatic pressing followed by sintering is preferred. The mechanical properties of the material are improved by this process, and the presence of the iron powder causes the increase in resistivity, which would otherwise occur, to be less pronounced.
