Abstract

992,621. Heating and cooling buildings; heat pumps; air conditioning. TEMPERATURE Ltd. Dec. 23, 1963, No. 50747/63. Headings F4H, F4U and F4V. Water is circulated to a plurality of air conditioning units 3, heat being transferred from the water to the air or vice versa by reversible compression condensation refrigeration cycles in each of the units. The direction of refrigerant flow in each of the cycles is individually controlled either manually or automatically. Water is supplied to the units 3 through pipes connected in parallel to a supply line 2 and water from the units passes through a cooling tower 6 or by-pass 7, according to the setting of a threeway valve 5, and through a calorifier 1. Water from a thermostatically controlled boiler 10 heats the calorifier 1 or passes through a by-pass 12 according to the setting of a three-way valve 11. The valves 5 and 11 are controlled by a thermostat 13 to maintain the temperature in the line 2 constant. When the valve 5 passes water through the by-pass 7, a switch shuts off a cooling tower fan (not shown), and when the valve 11 passes water through the calorifier 1 a switch ensures that the boiler is operating. A shunt circuit 9 may be provided to supply heat to the water in line 8 from air extraction systems or as waste heat from plant in the building. Condensate from the units may drain through lines 16. Each unit has fresh and room air intake ports and a filter, and a separate ventilation system is provided to supply fresh air from a central plant either to the unit fresh air intakes or to the spaces in which the units are located through grilles separate from the units. The air may be filtered, washed and tempered by the central plant.
