A metering device for delivering predetermined volumes of liquid comprises a metering reservoir 1 having its lower end connected to a siphon delivery tube 1A, means for initiating the siphoning action of the tube 1A, a dischargeable reservoir 8 connected to a liquid storage tank 3 and having its lower end connected to a siphon discharge tube 8A, and a U-tube 2 connecting the upper ends of the two reservoirs 1, 8 at a level below the normal level of the liquid in the storage tank. The level of liquid in the tank 3 is maintained at a constant height below that of the upper bends of the siphons 1A, 8A. The impulse for starting the siphons is given by air pressure produced in a tube 6 by liquid flowing in a constricted pipe 4 and causing the liquid to rise above the upper bends of the siphon tubes. As a result, liquid is siphoned from the reservoir 1 into a vessel 5 and from reservoir 8 into a drain 9, further influx from the reservoir 8 into the reservoir 1 being prevented as soon as the level in the reservoir 8 falls below the junction of this reservoir with the U- tube 2. Liquid siphoned from the reservoir 8 to the drain 9 may be pumped back to the tank 3. The diameter of the tube 7 connecting the tank 3 and reservoir 8 is constricted to ensure that the amount of liquid passing to the reservoir 8 at any time is less than that leaving the reservoir.
