Abstract

4 - (p - Aminobenzenesulphonamido) - 2,6-dimethoxypyrimidine is prepared by condensing p-acetamidobenzenesulphonyl chloride with 2 - methoxy - 4 - amino - 6 - chloro - pyrimidine to give 4 - (p - acetamidobenzenesulphonamido)-2 - methoxy - 6 - chloropyrimidine and then methoxylating and deacetylating this in either order or simultaneously. Deacetylation, which may be effected with alkali, yields 4-(p-aminobenzenesulphonamido - 2 - methoxy - 6 - chloropyrimidine, while methoxylation, which may be effected with methanol and caustic alkali or with a metal methylate, yields 4-(p-acetamidobenzenesulphonamido) - 2,6 - dimethoxy - pyrimidine. If methoxylation is carried out using caustic alkali, thereafter water is added to effect deacetylation, but these reactions may be effected simultaneously if a metal methylate or caustic alkali in aqueous methanol is used. Examples are given.
