Abstract

<PICT:0992273/C6-C7/1> <PICT:0992273/C6-C7/2> A continuously operable vertical retort installation, e.g. for the extraction of zinc from its ores, comprises a vertical retort adapted to be charged at the top and having at the bottom an extractor roll 6 with a plurality of pockets in its surface, the roll being rotatable with a clearance between itself and an extractor plate 3 for removing residues from the bottom of the retort, the distance between the bottom of the pockets and the extractor plate increasing towards the ends of the roll. The variation in the latter distance tends to ensure that a uniform rate of descent of the charge in the retort is attained and therefore a uniform zinc distribution over any cross-section of the retort. As described, the plate 3 is cut away at its ends 4 and the roll 6 consists of a portion 8 having on each side thereof a portion 7, the portions each having four blade arms which form there-between the pockets. The arms of each portion of the roll 6 are at 30 degrees to the arms of the adjacent portion or portions and the pockets of the portion 8 are shallower than those of the portions 7. The charge may comprise briquettes of compressed zinc oxide and a pulverized reducing agent and the retort may be heated by gas firing.
