Abstract
Saturated hydrocarbons are produced by passing a stream of hydrogen serially through at least three catalytic hydrogenation zones, the effluent from each zone being introduced into the next succeeding zone and adding unsaturated hydrocarbon charge and a saturated hydrocarbon diluent e.g. saturated product to the feed to each reaction zone except the last two zones where only unsaturated hydrocarbon charge is added to the feed to the penultimate zone and only saturated hydrocarbon diluent is added to the feed to the final zone. Hydrogen to charge mol. ratios of 6:1 to 15:1, temperatures of 100-500 DEG F. and liquid hourly space velocities of 0.5-5 are specified. Catalysts specified are nickel, platinum, palladium, cobalt, iron and compounds and mixtures thereof which may be supported on carriers e.g. magnesia, zirconia, alumina, silica and Kieselguhr. The hydrogenation of benzene to cyclohexane in four zones is described. The hydrogenation of butene, butadiene, toluene, xylenes and naphthalene is referred to.
