Abstract
991,796. Centrifugal strainer separators. WESTERN STATES MACHINE CO. Jan. 30, 1962, No. 3448/62. Heading B1D. A loading gate 5 at the end of the spout 4 of a tank 3 (all seen in elevation) is first opened by admission of air to a cylinder 10 which rocks opening lever 9, 7 about fulcrum 8. Charge material is thereby admitted to a centrifugal strainer basket 1 (seen in horizontal cross-section), while at the same time the opening action of the gate, through link 18, control unit 20, links 17, 21, and shaft 16 moves a charge feeler 15 anticlockwise towards the cake 2 being formed in the basket. As the cake increases in thickness, the charge feeler 15 is forced to move in a clockwise direction and thereby, through the mechanism referred to, to effect progressive closing of the gate 5 until, through a limit switch 31 (associated with mechanism 20), and related circuitry, the gate is closed without further dependence on the position of feeler 15. Thus far, the apparatus is almost identical with that shown in Fig. 1 of Specification 717,899 (referred to). The present invention includes further apparatus modifying the extent of opening of the loading gate 5 in accordance with the flow rate (which is a function of the viscosity and hydrostatic head of the charge material), so as to maintain a predetermined flow rate during successive loading cycles. An adjustable stop element 29 is automatically actuated so that, if the flow rate is low because of high viscosity or small hydrostatic head, element 29 is adjusted for increasing the initial opening of gate 5, and vice versa. This is effected by using the pressure of the charge material at a point A in the spout 4 to regulate, by means of a pipe probe 63 and a valve 70, the amount of compressed air flowing from a supply conduit 74 through a conduit 76 to a pneumaticallyoperated positioning device 100 which adjusts the stop 29. In Fig. 5 (not shown), certain parts of the mechanism of Fig. 1 are slightly simplified.
