Abstract

A hardenable composition comprises at least one epoxide resin, at least one hardening agent other than a borate ester, and, as accelerator, a metal chelate of 8-hydroxy-quinoline or a chelate of cobalt (II or III), copper (II), magnesium (II), nickel (II), dioxomolybdenum (VI), dioxouranium (VI), or oxovanadium (IV) with a 1,3-diketone or b -ketone ester. Specified accelerators are:-bis(8 - quinolinolato) - copper (II), or -dioxouranium (VI); bis(acetylacetonato)-cobalt (II), -nickel (II), -dioxomolybdenum (VI), or -oxovanadium (IV); tris(acetylacetonato) - cobalt (III); bis(p - hydroxybenzoylacetonato)-magnesium (II), or -copper (II) diglycidylether; bis(n-octylacetoacetato) - copper (II), -magnesium (II), -dioxouranium (VI), or -dioxomolybdenum (VI); bis (oleylacetoacetato)-copper (II); and bis(3-allylpentane-2,4-dionato)-oxovanadium (IV). Many epoxide resins are mentioned. Examples employ combinations of the above specified accelerators with Resins A, B or C. Resin A is prepared by epoxidation of the ester of dihydrodicyclopentadienyl alcohol with tall oil fatty acid. Resins B and C are prepared from epichlorhydrin and 2,2-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)-propane. Hardening agents employed in the examples are phthalic anhydride; 4,41-diaminodiphenylmethane; and, in Example XXV, N-benzyldimethylamine. The compositions may include fillers, diluents, plasticizers and modifiers. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 722,045 and 722,154.
