Abstract
Hydrogen peroxide is produced from anthraquinone by the cyclic reduction-oxidation process employing a working solution solvent comprising (a) at least one ketone in which each radical attached to the carbonyl group contains at least two carbon atoms, (b) an aliphatic ester of a cyclohexanol and/or of an alkyl cyclohexanol and (c) at least one hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon mixture. The ketone is desirably a dialkyl ketone, e.g. diethyl-, di-isopropyl- or di-isobutyl-ketone. The ester is preferably methyl cyclohexanol acetate, or an ester of a monocarboxylic acid having up to five carbon atoms. Advantageously, the hydrocarbon is benzene or is a mixture of aromatic and olefinic hydrocarbons. The constituents (a), (b) and (c) are preferably present in volume ratios of 40 : 35 : 25 to 70 : 5 : 25, especially 50 : 25 : 25. Also, constituents (a) and (b) may be present jointly in an amount, by volume, equal to constituent (c). The reduction step in the cyclic process may be conducted by means of hydrogen in the presence of catalysts prepared according to Specifications 746,385 and 760,737. The term "anthraquinone" includes substituted anthraquinones, e.g. 2-ethyl anthraquinone and substituted nuclearly hydrogenated anthraquinones, e.g. 2-ethyl tetrahydroanthraquinone. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 695,776, 746,385, 747,190, 758,235 and 760,737.
