Abstract

A solution for sealing anodic oxide films on aluminium or aluminium based alloys comprises a water-soluble organic compound containing at least one basic nitrogen in a heterocyclic ring, a water soluble carboxylic compound containing an unsubstituted amino group or a water soluble salt thereof. The preferred range for the nitrogen compound is 0.1-1.0% by weight and it may be nicotinamide, ethyl quinolinium iodide, 1-ethyl-2.6-dimethyl quinolinium iodide, 6.8-dichloro-2.4-(1H,3H)-quinazolinedione, meta-tolyurea or ethyl paraaminobenzoate. The solution may also preferably contain 0.005-0.1% of a water soluble chromate, molybdate dichromate or tungstate and is used at a pH of 5-8 and at a temperature of 160 DEG F. to the boiling point of the solution.
