Abstract

The beryllium content of ores, e.g. 1/2 -14%, is selectively extracted by intimately mixing beryllium-containing ore of 100 mesh (Tyler standard) or finer, with a predetermined amount of an inorganic ammonium fluoride salt which is just sufficient to react with the metal content of the ore to give NH4BeF3, or sufficient to react with all the metal content of the ore, and reacting the mixture at a pressure of at least 200 p.s.i., e.g. up to 700 p.s.i., and at a temperature of at least 200 DEG C., e.g. up to 700 DEG C. for a time to react completely the fluoride. The ammonium fluoride salt may be a silico-, ferric-, or bi-fluoride, a fluoborate, or a hexafluophosphate, and the ore/salt ratio for the silicofluoride may be 1.0 : 0.5-1.2. In an example, beryl (100 mesh or finer) is mixed with ammonium silicofluoride and placed in a mild steel tube with welded end caps which is placed in a furnace at 450 DEG C. for 6 hours. The product is then removed, crushed, and leached with water to give NH4BeF3 while leaving SiO2 and NH4AlF4. NH4F is also produced and reacts with beryl to give BeF2, AlF3, SiO2 and NH3, which may react with any SiF4 produced to give 2NH3.SiF4. The NH4BeF3 may be reacte with NH4F to give (NH4)2BeF4, which may be reduced to Be.
