990,947. Statistical apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 14, 1963 [Aug. 17, 1962], No. 32100/63. Heading G4M. Passage of a record card through a sensing station is timed by detecting the leading edge of the card, counting the number of pulses delivered by a pulse-wheel connected to the record driving mechanism corresponding to the distance travelled by the card in the interval between detection of the leading edge and arrival of the first column at the sensing station, and thereafter counting the number of pulses corresponding to the distance between successive columns. The apparatus shown may be used for timing either of two different types of cards. Pulse wheel PW has two sets of perforations which are sensed photo-electrically at PB 1 or PB 2 to provide a train of pulses the frequency of which is related to the distance between columns of the cards. Switches S 1 and S 2 are set according to the type of card being sensed. Counter TS is normally held at a predetermined count by bi-stable circuit FF 2 and switch S 2 . On arrival of the leading edge of the card at detector RD, FF 2 is set and counter TS counts pulses applied to terminal 1, starting at the predetermined count. When the first column is at a distance from the sensing station equal to the column-spacing; counter TS produces a pulse at output 3 to set bi-stable circuit FF 1 and open gate P, any pulses previously produced at output 4 being blocked. Subsequent pulses from output 4 occur as successive columns reach the sensing station and pass to output terminal 5. After sensing of the card is completed, a control circuit comp resets FF 2 and FF 1 .
