A tie bar arrangement for a tensile testing machine comprises two tie bars 13, 14 pivoted to opposite ends of a test piece 20 and each provided with a part-spherical portion 25 which co-operates with a corresponding portion 22 provided in an annular member 21. The co-operating surfaces are lubricated e.g. by fluid supplied through a tube 35 and channels 34 to the central aperture 24 of member 21. The open end of member 21 is closed by a seal 30.
