Abstract

990,509. Valves. TORRIDON STEEL Ltd. March 11, 1964, No. 10333/64. Heading F2V. In a tank vehicle 10 having a disc-type valve 15 (Fig. 2), arranged to control the flow of liquid from the base of the tanker compartment 11 through an outlet 13, the operating mechanism for the valve comprises a rod extending from the valve upwards through the upper wall 30 of the compartment, control mechanism 27 arranged to act on the upper end of the rod so as to lift it, and hence the valve, when desired, the control mechanism including a manual control member 32 and being such as to enable the rod to rise without movement of said manual control, and further control mechanism comprising an hydraulic piston and cylinder assembly 40 arranged to act on the lower end of the rod, which projects through the outlet passage 13, and a master hydraulic piston and cylinder assembly (Fig. 3), which delivers hydraulic liquid under pressure to the piston and cylinder assembly 40 to lift the rod and open the valve and arranged to be actuated by a manually-operated lever 63 capable of being retained against unintentional movement from the position in which it maintains the valve open. The mechanism 27 includes an inner cam element 33 which can slide vertically but is held from rotation by two splines on a sleeve 28 fixed to the roof of the tanker. A movable dome 31 with a handle 32 acts through a pin and bushing 34 moving in a slot 35 in the sleeve 28 on the cam surface 36 to raise and lower the rod and so open and close the valve. A spring 38 urges the cam downwards on to the pin, but a force upwards on the valve through rod 46 from the other operating mechanism allows the valve to open and the rod and cam to move upwards against the action of the spring. In the master cylinder, Fig. 3, an inlet 51 is connected to a pressure fluid reservoir, and an outlet 52 connects the apparatus to the piston 40. A piston 55 is connected by a spring 57 and a rod 59 to a member 60 housing a valve 61, this valve permitting replacement of fluid loss through leakage in the system when the piston is in the position shown. The piston is operated by a lever 63 acting through a roller 65 on the cam surface 66 of a member 67 which slides between plates 70 and a member 68 to move the piston, pin 72 guiding the member 67 and pin 73 connecting the same to the rod 75. When the lever is moved fully downwards the roller passes a " dead-centre " position on the cam surface, and the lever is thus held in the downward position. Each compartment of the tanker has its own operating mechanism, and the operating levers are all on the same axis, but may be grouped at any convenient position on the tank vehicle.
