Abstract
A metal treating solution comprising a chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent containing dissolved therein chromic acid (e.g. upwards from 0.02 weight per cent of CrO3), a tertiary alcohol containing 4-20 carbon atoms (e.g. at least 2 weight per cent), and zinc fluoride or zinc oxide (e.g. upwards from 0.002 weight per cent) gives higher corrosion resistance and improved bonding of paints (e.g. alkyd baking enamel) to Al, Al Alloy, Fe, steel and Zn. Specified chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents are trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene, CCl4, CHCl3, CH3CCl3, CH2Cl2 and mixtures thereof. Specified tertiary alcohols are tertiary butanol, tertiary amyl alcohol, 1,1-dimethyl 2,2-dichloropropanol, 1,1-2,2-tetramethyl propanol and triphenyl carbinol. Metal may be treated by (a) wire brushing or sand blasting, (b) degreasing with trichloroethylene or perchloroethylene, (c) immersing in the chromating solution, e.g. under reflux conditions, and (d) irradiating with ultra-violet light, heating or exposing to a reducing gas such as H2, H2S, HCHO, SO2 or H2O2 to set the chromate coating. Prior to chromatizing, the metal may be phosphatized. A specified phosphatizing solution contains 94.3% trichloroethylene, 5% pentanol-1, 0.2% dinitrotoluene, 0.3% phosphoric acid (85%) which may contain 6 gms. ZnO per 100 mls. phosphoric acid. Another phosphatizing solution is of trichloroethylene containing 5% amyl alcohol and 0.2% phosphoric acid. Both solutions are used at 87 DEG C. All percentages are by weight.ALSO:A metal (e.g. Al, Al alloy, Fe, steel or Zn) which has been chromated (see Division C7) is sprayed with an alkyd baking enamel consisting of: - pigment urea-formaldehyde-butyl alcohol resin 55% castor oil modified glyceryl phthalate hydrocarbon solvent candelilla wax dispersion tertiary-butyl alcohol. Prior to chromating the metal may be phosphated (see Division C7). Typically, metal may be treated by (a) wire brushing or sand blasting, (b) degreasing with trichloroethylene or perchloroethylene, (c) immersing in chromating solution, (d) irradiating with ultra-violet light, heating or exposing to a reducing gas such as H2, H2S, HCHO, SO2 or H2O2 to set the chromate coating, (e) applying the alkyd baking enamel, and (f) baking.
