990,361. Laminates and laminating. DIAMOND CARBIDE CO. Ltd. April 14, 1961, No. 13508/61. Heading B5N. An artificial board consists of a core sandwiched between two layers of sheet material and has voids but is hard and has sufficient strength to be handled and worked. The core comprises a major proportion of a filler of small particle size and 10 to 50% by weight of a partially condensed thermosetting resin, and is formed by heating and compressing a dry mixture of powdered resinous binder and filler. The sheet material may be paper, woven or unwoven fibre, glass fibre, cloth or plastics material. The filler may be bagasse, diatomaceous earth, sawdust, powdered asbestos, powdered shive waste, maize husks or straw. The binder may be a phenol-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde or melamine-formaldehyde resin. As shown, an endless belt of wire mesh is supported on rollers 2 and 3, of which the latter is heated. A web 14 of sheet material is fed on to the belt and a dry mixture of filler and binder dropped on to it from the hopper 4. Plates 5 and 6 meter the mixture, and are adjustable. Plate 5 reciprocates horizontally and plate 6 vertically. Heating elements 7 above and below the belt may be electric strip heaters, induction heating elements or steam-heated platens. The pressing device 8 comprises a second wire-mesh belt 9 running over a heated drive roller 10 and another roller 11. The lower run of the belt 9 is inclined as shown, and co-operates with a rigid support 12 below the lower belt. The second web 16 of sheet material is pressed on to the core layer, and the product comes out on to a cutting table 17, where it is cut by a knife 18. It may then be further cured in a heated press under light pressure.
