990,328. Shielding cells. COMMISARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. March 9, 1964 [March 7, 1963], No. 9933/64. Heading B4Q. An aperture extending through the shielding wall of a hot cell is closed by a plug in the form of a helical thread, the material of the plug having better ability to absorb radiation than the material of the wall so that the protection afforded by the plug is at least equal to that afforded by the wall. The space between the helices provides a path for cables, pipes &c. or for ventilation. The wall may be of concrete and the plug of iron or lead. As shown, Fig. 1, a tubular body 2 extending through a concrete wall 1 is closed by a single thread plug 3 of cast iron. The body 2 may be cast integrally with the plug 3 and be formed in axial sections which are mounted side-by-side. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown), the plug has three helical threads.
