A vice comprises a nut 13 mounted between walls 9 so that an axial force on the nut is transferred through the walls to a base 6. The base and walls are of sheet metal welded together. The nut is secured by a spigot 15 or a transverse pin. In a modification, the nut 27, Fig. 3, engages recesses in the walls 24.
