989,754. Manufacturing stranded conductors. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDERS CABLES Ltd. Dec. 6, 1963 [Dec. 7, 1962], No. 46272/62. Heading H1A. In a stranding machine for making transposed multiple strip conductor of substantially rectangular cross-section wherein component strips 23 are drawn from bobbins 11 mounted on cradles 2, disposed around the machine axis and about which they orbit with a planetary motion, there is provided for each strip a guiding die 12 with a throat of rectangular cross - section, its length being several times the width of the strip. Means are provided for rotating the dies (with the bobbin holders) about axes perpendicular to their cross-sections and passing through the centres of symmetry thereof or about axes substantially parallel thereto at the same angular speed as, but in the opposite direction to the plate carrying the cradles and bobbins, so as to maintain the major transverse axis of each die aperture substantially parallel with the major axis of the cross-section of the strip as it passes through the positioning head or transposing device. Figs. 1 and 3 show a back plate type of planetary device wherein the strip-guiding dies 12 are mounted upon forwardly-extending arms 9, 10 fixed to the bobbin cradles 2. The die aperture is formed by inwardly facing curved surfaces and its length is such as to prevent the edge of the strip from making contact with the bobbin flanges whilst being unwound. Back rotation of the bobbin cradles is obtained from cranks 13 (Fig. 2, not shown) fitted on the rear ends of shafts 3 and coupled to ring 14 either directly or by links 15. The invention may be used with a bobbin-carrying device of the cage type in which each bobbin cradle is supported at both ends, by front and rear trunnions turning in front and rear rotary discs. In this case, the front trunnions must be large enough either to accommodate the guiding dies or to allow for the side to side movement of the strips in such dies mounted forwardly of them.
