Abstract
Unsaturated fatty acid esters which contain at most two double bonds-one at most in the acid residue, and one at most in the alcohol residue, and which contain no hydroxyl groups are sulphonated using a mixture of SO3 and air or an inert gas containing 2-10% of SO3, at 0-20 DEG C. The preferred starting materials are unsaturated natural or synthetic fatty acid esters, e.g. sperm oil, olive oil, neat's foot oil, corn oil, mustard oil, rice oil, cottonseed oil, or teaseed oil, and triolein, oleyl oleate, and unsaturated fatty esters of polyhydric compounds such as glycol, penaerythritol and other polyhydroxy alcohols-particularly mannitol, sorbitol and saccharides. The reaction may be intermittent or continuous, and may be followed by bleaching with dilute H2O2 in an acid medium, neutralization, and distillation to remove water. The products contain 3-30% of SO3 according to the properties required, and may be used in the treatment of leather (see Division C6). In examples sperm oil, teaseed oil, oleyl oleate and triolein are sulphonated with a 5% mixture of SO3 in air or nitrogen, and the products used in dubbing mixtures for leathers.ALSO:Unsaturated fatty acid esters sulphonated with a mixture of SO3 and an inert gas (see Division C2) are used in the fat-liquoring of leather: they may be used alone as leather greasing agents, or as emulsifiers, in conjunction with a neutral oil, in the manufacture of leather greases, or in conjunction with other emulsifiers and a neutral oil. In examples, leathers are fat-liquored in a 250% by weight of a liquor containing 4-6% (based on the leather) of a dubbing agent containing 55-82% of a sulphonated sperm or teaseed oil, or sulphonated oleyl oleate or triolein, together with 15-40% of sperm oil, white oil and/or a mineral oil, and 2-5% of an ethoxylated fatty alcohol, or the dubbing agent may contain 10% of sulphonated sperm oil, 65% of sperm oil and mineral oil, and 25% of a train oil sulphate and sperm oil sulphate.
