Abstract
989,410. Grinding. MASCHINENFABRIK FAHR A.G. Aug. 1, 1963 [Aug. 3, 1962], No. 30584/63. Heading B3D. A knife-sharpening device in a disc-wheel chaff-cutter or like chopping machine comprises a rail 5 which is adapted to be mounted outside a housing 1 for the knife wheel and extend at right-angles to the wheel axis and parallel to the plane 18 of the knives 16, and a sharpening stone holder 12 slidable along the rail. The rail is provided with lugs 3, 4 which are pivotally connected by bolts 6 to brackets 2 mounted on the housing. The lug 4 has a gudgeon 7 bored to receive the end of a rod 8 which is screwthreaded into a nut 10 secured to the housing and formed with a handle 11. Washers 9 prevent axial movement of the rod relative to the gudgeon so that as the rod is rotated by the handle, the lugs are swung about the bolts to move the rail towards and away from the housing and a position wherein the sharpening stone 13 is in the plane 18 of the cutters. The holder 12 for the stone can be moved along the rail by a rod 14 having a handle 15. The opening in the housing can be closed by a plate when the sharpening stone is withdrawn, and a locknut 19 is provided to secure the stone in its adjusted position. In an alternative embodiment, the rod 8 has a ball engaging a spherical seating in the gudgeon 7.
