Abstract
An asphalt-free hydrocarbon charge containing hydrocarbons boiling above the gasoline range, and nitrogen and aromatics in amounts which adversely effect the hydrocracking of the feed is hydrocracked by reducing the nitrogen content, preferably to below 25 p.p.m. catalytically hydrogenating to reduce aromatic hydrocarbons, preferably to below 25%, and hydrocracking in the presence of hydrogen and a catalyst containing hydrogenation and cracking components. The feed may boil in the range 121-566 DEG C. and is subjected to solvent extraction with furfural, methyl or ethyl alcohol, ethylene glycol or acetonitrile, or selective adsorption with activated alumina or silica gel, or, preferably, to catalytic hydrofining to remove nitrogen compounds. Hydrofining is effected at 288-399 DEG C., 14-140 kg./cm.2 gauge, 0.5-10 vol./vol./hr. with 28-566 SCM of hydrogen per barrel over mixed oxides or sulphides of nickel/tungsten, nickel/ molybdenum, cobalt/tungsten or cobalt/molybdenum deposited on a support. Aromatics hydrogenation is effected at 149-399 DEG C., 14-70 kg./cm.2g. 0.25-25 vol./vol./hr. with 57-566 SCM of hydrogen per barrel over supported palladium, platinum, nickel or cobalt or their oxides or an oxide or sulphide of a Group VIa metal with nickel or cobalt oxide or sulphide. Hydrocracking is effected at 232-427 DEG C., 35-140 kg.cm.2g., 0.1-10 vol./ vol./hr. with 57-566 SCM of hydrogen per barrel over platinum, palladium, nickel tungstate, cobalt molybdate or anoxide or sulphide of tungsten, molybdenum or nickel on a siliceous cracking carrier, e.g. silica-alumina which may also contain magnesium or strontium oxide or fluorine.
