A subscriber wishing to make a call places a reading member on the part of a directory of book form which shows the wanted number, whereupon, in response to a triggering operation, the number if read and converted into selection signals for effecting the desired connection. The directory may be in the usual printed form, or it may display the numerical. information in the form of coloured dots, the reading being effected optically in these cases. Alternatively, embossed symbols may be used with mechanical scanning. Means may be provided for locating the reading member in position, for example, by pointers to be aligned with guide lines or marks on the directory, or by pins engaging holes or slots.
