[Also in Divisions G3 and H4] A transducer for transmitting and receiving longitudinal vibrations on a moving filament or web comprises a roller 31, grooved or otherwise, of high inertia, and attached to a piezo-electric crystal 21, or alternatively to an electromagnetic reed-type vibrator (not shown). Two such transducers are used as shown in Fig. 1 for measuring and/or controlling the modulus of elasticity of natural or synthetic fibres, plastics films or paper during production, by measuring the velocity of propagation of supersonic continuous or pulsed vibrations. The measurement is effected by detecting the phase displacement between transmitter 17 and receiver 19, placed preferably between a snubbing pin 13 and drawing drum 15. For automatic control, the correct phase displacement is set on a phase shifter 41 and error signals from phase detector 43 adjust the speed of drum 15 and hence alter the draw tension upon which the modulus depends.
