Abstract

988,815. Tamping machines; road breakers; pile driver. ARROW MANUFACTURING CO. Feb. 27, 1963, No. 7914/63. Headings E1G and E1H. [Also in Division B3] A percussion device (Figs. 1, 2 and 3) includes a propelling vehicle having a tool supporting bracket 24, 25 at one end to which a toolcarrying frame F is pivotally secured to swing about an axis extending transversely of the vehicle and including a pair of inter-connected spaced track members 27, 28 parallel with each other, and with the pivotal axis of the frame F, controllable power means, e.g. an hydraulic ram 36 to swing the frame F at 35 about its pivotal connection to the bracket 24, 25, a carriage T mounted on the frame F to move along the tracks 27, 28 transversely of the vehicle by controllable power means on the frame F a hammer tower formed by spaced and interconnected parallel tracks 53 and mounted at 62 on the carriage to swing about an axis which is perpendicular to the pivotal axis of the frame F by controllable power means on the carriage T, e.g. an hydraulic ram 67, and a hammer 56 reciprocated in the tower along the tracks 53 by controllable power means, e.g. an hydraulic lifting ram 72, joined to the tower carried by the carriage T. The power means to move the carriage T along the frame F, which has end plates 29, 30, includes a chain 47 attached at the ends to the carriage T by idler sprockets 49, 51, driven therebetween by an hydraulic motor 44, and passing over idler sprockets 48, 50. The motor 44 is mounted on the frame F, its drive shaft having a drive sprocket 46 extending into the space between the tracks 27, 28 which are rectangular in crosssection and are arranged to form V-shaped ways, the carriage F having flanges 41, 43 of corresponding V-shape. Manually-releasable means such as a drag link 38 (Fig. 5) hinged to the frame F and sliding along a bracket leg 25 to engage a stop 39 thereon, independent of the hydrualic ram 36, limits the swinging movement of the frame F. When desired, manuallycontrolled means are used to lock the hammer 72 against reciprocating movement in the tower.
