Abstract

Metal surfaces are coated with an aqueous mixture of a polymerized compound, phosphoric acid and a soluble chromium salt, finely dispersed in the mixture, whereafter the coating is dried by heating. Polymerized compounds include polyvinyl acetate, methacrylic acid ester, polystyrene, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, or copolymers of the foregoing, carboxy methyl cellulose, natural or synthetic rubbers or resins. These are preferably used in emulsified form, and sodium or ammonium dichromate mixed in together with phosphoric acid. Dyes and colouring agents may be added. The emulsion may be applied by brush, roller, spray or electrophoretic alloy to surfaces of steel, nickel, zinc, or aluminium. The coating is dried at 150-180 DEG C. for 15-20 minutes.
