The position of an electrode in an electric arc furnace is determined by linking it to the slider of a potentiometer in an automatically balanced bridge circuit, the rebalancing motor driving a pointer indicating the position of the electrode, whilst a voltmeter across the motor armature indicates the speed of travel.
