Abstract
988,494. Crankcase ventilation. MIDAS INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION. Oct. 21, 1963 [Aug. 13, 1962], No. 41452/63. Heading FIB. [Also in Division B3] A method of installing a crank case ventilating system in an internal combustion engine comprises delivering high pressure air into the inlet manifold, and cutting an opening in the intake wall while maintaining the pressure, so that the chips are blown out. The 6-cylinder I.C. engine 11, Figs. 1 and 2, comprises a rocker arm cover 12 in communication with crankcase 13, an oil filler opening 14, a road draft tube 15, intake manifold 16, carburettor 17, and air cleaner 18. Gas is drawn out of cover 12 through an adaptor 21, a conduit 19, and a flow control valve 22, Fig. 6, and is drawn into manifold 16. Air is supplied to the crank case from air cleaner 18, through a conduit 23. Valve 22 comprises a tubular body 25, Fig. 6, screwed into manifold 16, and a spring urged valve portion 28. A hole is drilled and tapped in the manifold for reception of the body 25 by first removing air cleaner 18 and fitting a special fitting 32, Fig. 3, over the carburettor 17, the latter being opened to full throttle position. Air is admitted through a hose 36, the pressure is maintained at 45 pounds per square inch and a drill bit, Fig. 7, is used to drill the hole. A hole is also cut in cover 12 for conduit 23, and during this operation tube 15 is plugged as at 44, Fig. 1, and a temporary fixture 45, Fig. 14, carrying an air hose 36, is connected to oil filler opening 14. Air is admitted through the fixture and a hole is drilled by a pilot drill 52, Fig. 12, followed by a trepanning tool 46, the latter being enclosed by a sleeve 49, having a depth determining flange 51. A grommet 54, Fig. 4, is inserted in the hole for connection to conduit 23.
