Abstract

In a method for producing a temperature gradient to cause strong updrafts of air e.g. to disperse fog, smoke, or to induce rainfall, an area of land of at least three square miles is coated with heat radiating and/or heat absorbing materials which are substantially different in thermal properties from the sorrounding areas. The materials used may be asphalt, a residual petroleum product, powdered gypsum, limestone or calcined lime and the coating may be discontinuous, part of the area being covered with a highly radiating material and part with a relatively low radiating material. A herbicide may be included in the coating to prevent growth of vegetation through it and an animal repellent may be used at the edges of the area. Cloud-seeding material, e.g. finely divided silver iodide, solid carbon dioxide or carbon black, may be used in the air over the area to aid production of rainfall.
