Abstract

An improved polychloroprene rubber is obtained by treating a polychloroprene rubber latex with an alkali metal formaldehyde sulphoxylate. The latex may comprise a polymer or copolymer of chloroprene formed by polymerization in the presence of sulphur and/or sulphur compounds, such as mercaptans. The preferred alkali metal salt is the sodium salt. The sulphonylate preferably in amount of 5 per cent or less based on the dry rubber may be added after shortstopping the polymerization and removing unpolymerized monomer in the form of an aqueous solution or dispersion. Emulsifying agents and antioxidants, e.g. 2-6-di-tertiary-butyl-p-cresol may also be present. The pH may be adjusted, e.g. from 11.5 to 7, and the product isolated by freeze coagulation.
