Abstract
987,863. Thermal switches; cam operated switches. S. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND Ltd. July 14, 1961 [July 14, 1960], No. 24508/60. Heading H2B. The switch comprises an actuator arranged to be moved by a spring between a variable displaced position and a datum position, means holding the actuator in its displaced position, a trip member settable in the path of a part movable by a thermal element so as to be engaged by said part at a temperature dependent on the setting, the actuator being connected to the trip member by a cam and follower so that the setting of the trip member is dependent on the displacement of the actuator, the latter being released by engagement of the trip member by the said part. As shown, the actuator comprises a shaft 7 carrying a cam 37 controlling a switch 65 and is movable clockwise from the datum position shown in Fig. 2 to stress the spring 23. A cam 6 on shaft 7 tilts a lever 17 about an adjustable pivot 19 to an extent determined by the rotation of the shaft 7, which is held in its displaced position by the end 16 of lever 17 engaging a tooth 14 on the cam 6. When the predetermined temperature is reached a part 33 carried by a diaphragm 34 engages a part 30 carried by lever 17 and tilts the end 16 clear of cam 6 so that the shaft 7 is restored by the spring 23 to the datum position. The camshaft 7 is set by a spindle 10 via helical gears 8, 9, and if after setting cam 6 it is desired to set a lower temperature the spindle is turned in the appropriate direction. Since cam 6 is locked by end 16, the reaction of gears 8, 9 causes the spindle to be displaced to the right, Fig. 2, so that a disc 12 engages a lever 13 which has lugs 73 which tilt lever 17 to disengage end 16 from the cam. In the datum position of shaft 7, a lug 24 displaces an arm 27 pivoted at 28 so as to disengage a brake 55 from the balance wheel 43 of a timer, Fig. 3. A time delay is set by turning a shaft 40 carrying switching cams 51... 53 counterclockwise to strain a spring 41 an amount depending on the desired delay, the delay period only starting when the brake is moved clear of wheel 43.
