Abstract

The invention comprises dyes of the formula:- <FORM:0987828/C4-C5/1> wherein R is hydrogen, alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl, R1 is hydrogen or a C1-C5 alkyl radical, R2 is a C1-C5 alkyl or alkoxy radical or an aryl radical, X is an acid anion, and the aromatic rings and radicals R, R1 and R2 may contain non-ionic substituents. The dyes are made by condensing a naphtholactam of the formula:- <FORM:0987828/C4-C5/2> where R is as above, with an indole of the formula:- <FORM:0987828/C4-C5/3> where R1 and R2 are as above, and when R is hydrogen converting the product, if desired, into the base and treating it with a quaternating agent. The dyes dye, print and bulk-dye synthetic superpolyamides, acetate rayon, polyacrylonitrile and polyvinylidene cyanide, colour leather and are used in rubber printing.
