[Also in Divisions B3 and E1] A wire having six to nine spiral flutes is produced by drawing the wire through a die provided with a passage having an initial portion of circular cross-section and a terminal portion with six to nine helical lands and intervening grooves, the wire having a minimum radial dimension greater than the maximum radial dimension of the circular section part of the die, and the die being free to rotate about the longitudinal axis of said passage. The die assembly comprises a holder B and a die having a bore C which tapers from a funnel shape 30 to a wire reducing smooth portion 31 followed by a helically grooved portion 33. The assembly rotates freely in anti-friction bearings. A wire nail, Fig. 5, is made from the wire on a standard nail machine.
