Abstract

987,630. Vehicle suspensions; mounting differential gears. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. March 2, 1964 [April 11, 1963], No. 14494/63. Headings B7D and B7H. In a motor vehicle rear wheel suspension, a swing axle 11 is connected by a universal joint 9 to the output shaft 8 of a differential gear connected by brackets 5 to the vehicle body, the forward connection including pivot pins 7 fitting into rubber bushes 23. Each half axle is rotatably mounted in a wheel support member 13 to which is rigidly attached a trailing arm 17 mounted at its forward end in the vehicle body by a rubber bushed pivot the axis of which intersects the pivotal centre of the universal joint 9. A self-levelling vibration damper-air spring unit 21 is pivotally connected about a longitudinal axis to the wheel support member 13 and at its upper end is connected to the vehicle body in the wheel arch.
