Abstract
987,611. Grapnels. POSTMASTER - GENERAL. March 6, 1962 [Dec. 6, 1960], No. 42038/60. Heading B7S. A submarine cable grapnel has cable prongs with cable engaging pulleys rotatably mounted at the roots thereof, an acoustic signal emitter, and means for causing the emitter to emit a signal on rotation of any one of the pulleys. In the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 2 the grapnel consists of two similar ports 1, 2 connected in tandem by a hinged link 3 and having on their housing 4 prongs 5 between which pulleys 6 are keyed on a shaft 7. 8 is a spring-loaded gate. Oppositely handed cams 9, 10 driven via freewheels 11, 12 from the shaft 7 actuate a resonator rod 25 when a cable is engaged by a pulley and rotates same. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 rotation of a pulley 6 turns a disc to operate a switch which actuates a battery-operated electric oscillator in the housing 4 connected to a transducer 41 (or 42).
