A water-closet pan 10 is formed above the water line 11 therein with a shelf, e.g. in the form of a ledge 12, to entrap a specimen of the urine discharged from a person sitting thereon. The ledge 12 may be used to support a removable container for the urine. The pan 10 may be supported on the floor by a pedestal 15 or by a metal support on which it is mounted, or it may be supported by a load-bearing wall.
