Abstract

A method of treating a solid material, e.g. bitumen, pitch or asphalt, comprises reducing the solid material to a granular or pulverulent form under conditions at which the granules or dust do not coalesce immediately on forming. Preferably, the solid material is reduced at a temperature below 18 DEG C. and above -80 DEG C. in a swing hammer crusher, the reduced material being such as to pass through a 1/2 inch mesh sieve. The granules or dust are preferably mixed with a fine dust, e.g. slag dust, limestone dust, granite dust or short asbestos fibre, to separate the granules or dust of the material and prevent the material from coalescing, the separator dust being such as to pass through a No. 7 (British Standard) mesh sieve. An example is described.
