Abstract

987,058. Feedwater supply systems for steam boilers; cooling burners. SULZER BROS. Ltd. March 16, 1964 [April 2, 1963], No. 11041/64. Headings F4A and F4T. In the feedwater system of a steam boiler the regulating valve in the main feed line is bypassed by a conduit containing heat exchange means wherein the by-passed water is used for cooling purposes. Thus it may be used for cooling structural parts of the boiler, burners or in surface heat exchangers used for regulation purposes. In the form shown, a feed pump 1 feeds water through preheaters 2, 3, a pipe 4 containing a restrictor 5 and a regulating valve 6 to the economizer 7 whence it flows through the evaporator-superheater 8, steam discharging to the point of use at 9. The burner 10 of the boiler is protected by a cooling coil 11 receiving water through a pipe 12 branching from the pipe 4 between the restrictor 5 and the valve 6, the water returning to the main feed circuit downstream of the valve 6 through a pipe 13, the flow through the by-pass being established by the pressure drop across the valve 6. The latter is controlled according to load and temperature sensed at 16 whilst the flow through the coil 11 is controlled by a valve 19 which is set according to load or according to the temperature of the burner. In a modification the pipe 12 branches from the main feed line before the preheaters so that cool water flows to the coil 11. In a further modification, the pressure drop across the feed regulator valve 6 is controlled at a constant value for each load reducing fluctuation in the by-pass, the control valve in which may be omitted.
