Abstract

986,747. Shift registers. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 21, 1964 [Jan. 24, 1963], No. 2619/64. Heading G4C. [Also in Division H3] A multistable state circuit or shift register comprises a plurality of series circuits connected in parallel across a power supply, each series circuit comprising a resistor R1, a gas filled tube D1 and the parallel combination of a capacitor C1 and a diode G1. Each series circuit is coupled to the next via a resistor R1n and a diode G1n. Shift pulses on line P are fed to each stage via capacitors such as C1n. Data may be fed in to the first stage at the termination of each shift pulse on line P, neon tube D1 being ignited or not in accordance with the data, the pattern being stepped from left to right by the shift pulses on line P. Alternatively data may be fed in parallel by means of diodes (not shown) connected to the cathodes of the neon tubes. Assuming neon tube D1 is ignited and D2 estinguished, the leading edge of a -150 V shift pulse at P reduces the potential at the junction of R1n and G1n so as to extinguish tube D1 and charge C2 negatively via diode G1n so as to ignite tube D2. Capacitor C2 is then discharged by tube D2 and held discharged by diode G2. It is explained how patterns such as that in which successive tubes are conductive, may be shifted by one stage on the arrival of a shift pulse at P.
