Abstract

A web of carded or combed fibres 15 is fed into the nip of rollers 19, 21 where it is brought into contact with a continuous non-fibrous thermoplastic film 23. The fibres are then needle punched through the film by conventional means at 25 and are retained therein by the jagged edges of the perforations made by the barbed needles 27. The fabric so formed is then ready for use but for greater strength the fibres are more closely bonded to the film. This may be done by adhesives such as rubber or asphalt or by softening the film with a solvent or, preferably, by heating the film to soften it and cause it to flow into more intimate contact with the fibres. In Fig. 1 this heat treating is accomplished by passing the fabric through a chamber 29 where it is treated by a heated fluid e.g. air, steam or a liquid. In Fig. 4 the fabric passes between circulating, endless, metal band 37 heated at 47. The separation of the bands is adjustable so that the fabric may be compressed to a predetermined extent while the film softening is in process. The bands may be unbroken, or be of fine mesh in which case heating may be hot air. The bands may also have openings or projections to emboss the fabric during treatment. Heated pressure plates may, alternately, be used. The fibres may be treated e.g. dyed or roughened before punching and fibres of different colours may be used to form a pattern: the stroke of the needles may be varied to vary the depth of pile over the fabric. Fibres may be punched into the film from both its sides. The film may be vinyl resins (e.g. polystyrene, polyvinylchloride, polytetrafluorethylene and polyvinyl butyral), polyamide resins (e.g. nylon) or polyolefine resins (e.g. polyethyline or polypropylene). The fibres may be natural (e.g. cotton, linen, wool or silk) or artificial (e.g. the above resins or cellulosic fibres such as rayon): mineral fibres such as glass or metal or combinations of natural and synthetic fibres may also be used. The fabric of the invention may be used e.g, for upholstery, floor coverings, bedding articles, bandages, diapers, towels, raincoats, hats, umbrellas and footwear.
