Abstract

Waste gases arising in phthalic anhydride manufacture, containing in general phthalic and maleic anhydrides and 1,4-naphthaquinone, are purified by washing with an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate. Phthalic and fumaric acids may be recovered by acidification of the aqueous solution.
