Earth boring apparatus is readily attached to and detached from a mounting. The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 of the first Provisional Specification has a wash pipe 4 slidable connected with a kelly 2 which is rotated by a motor 7 through reduction gearing 9 and chain drive 8. At its lower end the kelly has a foot valve 10 and is adapted for attachment to the drill pipe. The kelly slides within a bearing 12 in the body of the apparatus and has a bearing 11 sliding within the body which has arms 25 for attachment to the mounting. The kelly is raised and lowered in the body by a chain 14 driven by motor 15 and reduction gearing 16. Flushing liquid is circulated by a pump 17 driven by a motor 18. The motors are hydraulic motors and are controlled from a panel 24. The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 of the second Provisional Specification is adapted to be carried by a tractor 13. Masts 1 are pivotally connected to a chassis 12 having mast raising rams 14 and backstays 15, and the chassis is fixed to the tractor. Drill pipe is rotated by a head 7 having pins 8 slidable in the mast, the head being raised and lowered by rams 4. A pipe 10 supplies flushing air or water to the rotary head which may be displaced laterally by rams 9 to permit insertion of drill pipe or to facilitate the handling of casing by a hoist 6. The masts have hydraulically operated feet 2, and carry a guide 11a and "break out" ram 19. The chassis carries an hydraulic fluid reservoir 17 and a pump 18 for actuating the components of the apparatus is driven by the tractor motor. If the tractor has a suitable reservoir and pump, the reservoir 17 and pump 18 may be dispensed with. The masts may carry a shelter for the operators and a lighting set may be installed on the apparatus. Specifications 937,425, 982,258 and 986,339 are referred to.
