Abstract

A tablet is coated with an inner layer consisting of a sugar and an outer layer consisting of methyl cellulose and a polyalkylene glycol. The term methyl cellulose is used to mean the methyl ether of cellulose containing from about 24-32% of methoxy groups, and the said methyl ether of cellulose containing from about 4-12% of 2-hydroxypropyl groups. Suitable polyalkylene glycols are polyethylene glycol and polypropylene glycol having an average molecular weight of from 200 to 900. The sugar layer may contain adjuvants and preservatives. Conventional dusting agents may be applied between sugar coatings, and conventional colouring, flavouring, sweetening, and opacifying agents, and scents may be added to the outer coating. The sugar coating may be applied using a tumbling pan and the outer coating by using air-suspension coating machines.
