Abstract

Oxygen-substituted hydroxylamines of the general formula R-O-NH2, wherein R represents a linear or branched chain alkyl or aralkyl group, are prepared by refluxing an N-alkoxy or N-aralkoxy phthalimide with hydrazine hydrate in an inert organic solvent, acidifying the reaction mixture with hydrochloric acid, refluxing, cooling, filtering off the precipitate, evaporating the filtrate to dryness in vacuo and then obtaining the desired hydroxylamine in the free base form from the hydrochloride so formed. The reaction ic preferably performed employing an equimolar amount of hydrazine hydrate in a C1-C5 aliphatic alcohol. The examples relate to compounds wherein R is ethyl, isopropyl, butyl and benzyl.
