985, 911. Electric selective signalling systems. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 29, 1961 [May 27, 1960], No. 18741/60. Heading G4H. A system for indicating the relative displacement of two members by using independent "coarse" and "fine" digitisers is characterized in that an electrical coupling between the two digitisers is provided to prevent errors which might otherwise occur at relative displacements at which "carry" should occur from the fine to the coarse digitiser. As described the fine digitiser comprises an inductosyn, Fig. 1, having a fixed winding A and a movable pick-up winding BC which produces a signal phase-displaced with respect to a reference signal, which phasedisplacement is digitised, in known manner, by gating relatively high frequency clock-pulses to a counter, and the coarse digitiser comprises an array of conductive segments 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 &c., Fig. 1, and two brushes K, L, Fig. 2. The brushes K, L, when displaced, sequentially apply potentials to the outputs leads of the conductive segments. This, as shown, will, for some positions of the brushes, cause two of the segments to raised in potential simultaneously, and the particular segment that is to provide the final output is selected by an array of gates controlled by signals on two leads M, N from the fine digitiser, it being arranged that a potential is applied to lead N when the fine digitiser is in a position corresponding to the bottom half of an increment of the coarse digitiser and that lead M is marked when lead N is not marked.
