Abstract

985,715. Centrifugal separators. M. CHRIST, [trading as MARTIN CHRIST FABRIK ELEKTRO-MEDIZINISCHER APPARATE]. April 29, 1963 [May 12, 1962], No. 16771/63. Heading B2P. [Also in Division G3] In a centrifuge comprising a housing 1 defining a chamber containing a rotor 16, 17 and adapted to be evacuated during the rotor operation, the temperature of the rotor is sensed by means of a temperature-sensitive element 21 connected to an electrical circuit on the rotor so that, upon a variation occurring in the rotor temperature, the element 21 causes a variation in the flow of electrical current in the electrical circuit to provide an output signal to which is responsive an electrical control circuit which controls the flow of electric current through Peltier elements 26 arranged around the rotor so as to maintain the temperature of the latter sensibly constant. The element 21 is in the form of a thermistor located in a hollow shaft 15 at the end of a driving shaft 13 and on which are secured the rotor parts 16, 17 of different shape and provided with tumblers 19, 20 respectively fixed and pivotable with respect to the rotor axis during operation. The thermistor 21 is electrically connected to a coil 22 fixed to the shaft 13 and inductively coupled to a stationary coil 23 having terminals 24. The signal from the coil 23 is converted to a unidirectional voltage and compared with a stabilized potential in a control bridge, Fig. 2, whose output is connected via a reversing push-button switch, an amplifier and electrical leads 30 to the Peltier elements 26 so as to heat or cool the chamber. The Peltier elements are circumferentially distributed around a metal mantle 25 enclosing the rotors 16, 17 and are associated with cooling liquid jackets 27. The chamber is evacuated by means of a vacuum pump connected at 2 and is closed by a cover 3 which, during opening or closing by means of a chain 8, sprockets 9, 10 and a servomotor 11, slides on rails 6 by means of rollers 5. To open the cover the servomotor is energized through a delay circuit by depressing the push-button of the switch. This interrupts the connection through the switch from the control bridge to the amplifier which is simultaneously put into connection with a dew point detector which, should the dew point of the ambient air be above the temperature of the centrifuge chamber, delivers an output signal to the amplifier. The latter responds to the signal by passing current through the Peltier elements in such a direction that they cause the temperature inside the chamber to be raised above the dew point of the ambient air. The delay period of the delay circuit is sufficient to allow this action to take place before the cover is opened.
