985,583. Hot foil stamping. METAGLO Ltd. July 5, 1963 [July 5, 1962], No. 25900/62. Heading B6J. A method of hot foil stamping an article or a portion of an article formed of a material which is not thermoplastic or sufficiently resilient at the stamping temperature, comprises forming a coating of a thermoplastic resin on the surface to be stamped, and then hot-stamping a foil on to the applied coating. The thermoplastic resin coating may be applied by spraying, brushing, dip-coating, roller coating or curtain coating. Suitable resins include polymers of acrylic or methacrylic esters such as the methyl esters, and vinyl chloride vinyl acetate copolymers. Pigments, stabilizing agents and dyes may be added and the coating when dried may be transparent or pigmented, full gloss, semi-gloss, eggshell or matt as required. Suitable resins may have reactive groups such as carboxylic groups added which enable the resins to be cured by the application of heat so that the resins are toughened but remain sufficiently thermoplastic or resilient for successful hot foil stamping.
